XGOpedia is a collaborative website to maintain the eXtended Gene Ontology (“XGO”), a Gene Ontology variant to which new relations are added using contexts defined by other ontologies of the Open Biomedical Ontologies Foundry and broadly based on the principles defined by Smith et al.
XGOpedia is collaboratively maintained by volunteer scientists ("XGOpedians") who get registered using a cooptation mechanism (the “XGO community”). XGOpedia allows all users to browse XGO and to query the ontology to prepare sub-parts of XGO (called “GO*”, GO star) in obo format based on a description of an experimental situation. In addition, the XGOpedians may add, delete or modify a relation between two concepts, using the easy-to-use XGO Knowledge Engineering Editor. To keep the link with the GO gene annotations, an XGOpedian however cannot add, edit, or delete a XGO category and cannot modify the sub/super hierarchy. The XGO community is largely self-organizing with all of its operations being fully traced. Ambiguities, disagreements or disputes are resolved using a transparent voting mechanism. |
